Life insurance: protection, savings and returns
Comparing personal accident, protection-only life and savings life insurance: benefits, premiums, limitations and acceptance
Life insurance helps you establish in advance what financial support a person or their loved ones will receive following events specified in the contract. Savings life insurance also helps build a sum for a particular date. However, personal accident insurance, protection-only life cover and a savings plan produce different results in terms of cover, cost and access to money.
This article considers voluntary personal insurance in Kazakhstan, primarily traditional savings life insurance. We compare the reasons for payment, premium obligations, guaranteed amounts and limitations rather than advertising labels. Savings insurance is also life insurance; for clarity, “protection-only life insurance” below means cover without a savings-based maturity payment.
Personal accident
Protection against specified consequences of a sudden event.
Protection-only life
Financial support on death and for selected additional risks.
Savings life
Protection plus a contractual payment at the end of the term.
Three options: what are you actually buying?
| Criterion | Fixed-term personal accident insurance | Protection-only life insurance | Traditional savings life insurance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Support for injury, disability or death caused by an accident, depending on the selected cover. | Protection for loved ones if death occurs during the policy term; other risks are added separately. | Build savings by a specified date while maintaining agreed insurance protection. |
| Death from illness | Usually outside an accident-only policy. | May be covered if the contract provides for it, subject to exclusions. | May form part of the main cover, but the covered causes and timing must be checked. |
| Non-fatal injury | A benefit may be payable under an injury benefit table or another contractual rule. | Only if the relevant risk is included. | Usually requires a selected additional option. |
| Term ends without a claim | A standard non-savings plan has no savings-based maturity payment. | A standard protection-only plan has no savings-based maturity payment. | A survival benefit is payable at maturity under the contract. |
| Premiums | Payment for protection during the agreed period. | Payment for the selected risks and sums insured. | Fund protection, savings and the plan’s specified expenses. |
| Return | Not the product’s purpose. | Not the product’s purpose. | Depends on guaranteed payments, the premium schedule and possible non-guaranteed additions. |
| Early exit | Termination and any refund follow the law and contract. | Does not mean all premiums paid will be returned. | Check the surrender value for the particular date; it may be below premiums paid. |
This compares typical structures, rather than uniform terms for all insurers. Combined products and plans with special benefits also exist. “Term” means a limited period of protection; the word alone does not establish whether there are savings or which causes of death are covered.
Which events qualify for an insurance benefit?
1. Personal accident
Both the definition of the event and its consequences matter. A policy may provide benefits for specific injuries, recognised disability or death caused by an accident. A fall without a consequence specified in the contract does not always entitle you to money. An illness does not become an accident simply because it arises unexpectedly.
An injury benefit is often a percentage of the relevant sum insured. Teaching example: if that sum is KZT 10 million and the table assigns 5% to a confirmed injury, the calculation is KZT 500,000. This 5% is not a market standard. Payment for treatment, a daily hospital benefit and an injury-table benefit are different mechanisms.
2. Protection-only life insurance
The main risk is the insured person’s death during the cover period from specified causes. Unlike an accident-only policy, the plan may also cover illness. “Death from any cause” must be read together with exclusions and commencement conditions, rather than as a promise to pay in absolutely every circumstance.
Disability, critical illness, temporary incapacity, hospitalisation and waiver of premiums are not automatically included. Each additional risk may have its own benefit amount, definition, waiting period and document requirements. A diagnosis must meet the insurance criteria: not every illness is a “critical illness”.
3. Savings life insurance
A typical endowment-style plan provides for survival to a specified date and death during the protection period. The amounts for these events may differ. Before buying, request two separate calculations: the benefit at successful maturity and the amount a beneficiary would receive on death in the first, fifth and final policy years.
Do not assume the family will necessarily receive all future premiums, savings, the sum insured and bonuses together. The formula is contractual. A payment for one risk may terminate the contract, while an additional option may follow its own rules. If you are saving for a child, clarify whose life is insured and what happens to the savings if the parent paying the premiums dies.
What does participation cost, and what determines the premium?
There is no universal tariff for everyone. Cost depends on age, term, sums insured, risks, health, occupation, hazardous activities and other underwriting factors. The plan determines the minimum premium, currency and available payment frequency. Publishing one price without these parameters would be misleading.
- Single or regular premium. Clarify the total commitment, payment dates and permitted payment methods.
- Main and additional cover. Ask which options increase the price and what they provide.
- Currency and indexation. Currency linkage does not eliminate currency risk: the conversion rate and payment currency matter.
- Plan expenses. Find out which deductions are built into the calculation and which may apply separately.
- Changing payments. Ask whether premiums can be increased, reduced or paused, and how cover would change.
An affordable payment matters more than the largest promised capital
Hypothetical payments of KZT 25,000 a month for ten years total KZT 3,000,000. This is budget arithmetic, not a particular policy price or a forecast of its final benefit. Check whether you could keep up the schedule during a temporary income reduction. It is sensible to keep an everyday emergency reserve separate from a long-term plan.
Profit and return: four different measures
| Measure | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Guaranteed benefit | An amount fixed by the terms, provided obligations are met and the specified event occurs. Compare it with the complete premium schedule. |
| Guaranteed rate used in pricing | Clarify the base to which it applies. Interest on an insurance reserve does not necessarily equal the effective return on all the client’s money. |
| Profit participation | Additional allocations under the plan rules. A projection of future bonuses is not a guarantee because it appears in an attractive table or reflects past results. |
| Effective return to the client | The result of all premiums and benefits, taking their dates and applicable expenses into account. Regular premiums require a cash-flow calculation. |
A guaranteed insurance benefit does not mean the difference between it and total premiums must be positive for every term and combination of options. Part of the cost buys protection rather than savings alone. Request a guaranteed scenario separately from an illustration with additional income. Already allocated bonuses must also be distinguished from expected future bonuses.
For investment-linked products, including Unit-linked, results may depend on the value of selected assets and the client bears investment risk. Such a product should not be presented as traditional savings life insurance with an unconditionally guaranteed investment result. Clarify which part of the capital is contractually protected and what loss is possible.
Teaching calculation: 40% over ten years is not 40% a year
Suppose a single initial premium is KZT 1,000,000 and the only benefit, ten years later, is KZT 1,400,000. The increase is KZT 400,000, or 40% over the full term. The compound annual return is approximately 3.42%: (1.4)1/10 − 1. This is a hypothetical cash flow, not an insurer’s offer. Insurance protection is assessed separately.
With monthly premiums, this formula cannot be applied to the total: each payment is invested for a different length of time. Request an effective return calculation using the actual payment dates, for example XIRR. Compare offers in the same currency, over the same term, with identical schedules and comparable cover. Inflation reduces the purchasing power of a future benefit even when the nominal result is positive.
Early surrender: how much can you withdraw?
The surrender value is the amount payable when a savings contract ends early. It does not automatically equal premiums paid or the maturity benefit. Before taking out the policy, obtain a year-by-year table and clarify calculations within a year: the termination date may affect the result.
In the early periods, the amount returned may be substantially below premiums paid, and certain regular-premium contracts do not provide for a surrender value at the end of the first year. Single-premium and special educational plans may follow different rules. A full refund at any time cannot be promised for all savings life insurance.
Request written figures for termination after six months, one year, three years and at your target date. Separately clarify the rules for cancellation shortly after purchase: application deadlines, deductions and statutory exceptions. If a loan within the surrender value is offered, check interest and the effect of debt on future benefits: it is not a free withdrawal of your own savings.
What happens if you stop paying?
Consequences depend on the plan: there may be a contractual grace period, reduced sum insured, suspension of cover or termination. Retaining part of the savings does not always mean retaining the original protection. Reinstatement may require additional payment and a fresh health assessment.
Payments up to date
The agreed amounts and contract terms are the reference point.
Payment missed
Clarify the status of cover and the deadline to remedy the situation.
Contract terminated
A refund or surrender-value calculation applies, rather than a maturity benefit.
If income falls, first ask about available changes. Unilaterally stopping payments and agreeing a revised schedule are different situations. After a change, request an updated document with amounts, risks and dates rather than relying on an oral agreement.
Exclusions: when an event may not be covered
The precise list is governed by law and the specific contract. It may differ between the main cover and additional benefits. The following are points to check, not a claim that every insurer excludes them identically.
- Intentional and unlawful acts. The nature of the acts, circumstances and applicable rules must be examined.
- Pre-existing conditions. The wording, disclosed information, period and causal link matter. A diagnosis alone does not mean universal refusal for every event.
- Alcohol, drugs and hazardous activities. Clarify which circumstances are excluded, which require agreement and how their connection to the event is established.
- War and other special risks. Territory and causes are assessed under the protection terms.
- Suicide. A special Civil Code rule applies in Kazakhstan: the insurer is not relieved of a death benefit payable under personal insurance if the contract has been in force for at least two years at that point. Such an exclusion cannot be described as indefinite.
- An event outside the definition. An injury, illness or degree of incapacity may not meet the definition of the selected risk.
The phrase “life insurance” does not replace checking these conditions. An exclusion, knowingly false information and a breach of notification requirements are separate issues. Consequences are assessed under the law, contract and facts; every inaccuracy or delay should not be treated as an automatic refusal.
Limitations: a covered risk still has payment conditions
- Age at entry and maturity. Being within the entry-age range does not necessarily allow every term.
- Waiting period. Some risks may start later than the main contract.
- Survival period after diagnosis. Certain critical illness plans impose additional timing conditions on payment.
- Definition of disability. Category, cause, timing of recognition and documents must meet the terms.
- Territory and scope. Round-the-clock cover and cover only at work or during sport are different products.
- Limits and repeat benefits. Check the limit per risk, overall limit and whether the policy continues after a first payment.
- Payment recipient. Maturity and death may have different beneficiaries; details must be accurate.
Who may not be accepted for insurance?
There is no market-wide list of people prohibited from obtaining personal insurance. The insurer assesses the particular risk through underwriting. One product may be unsuitable while another is available with a different amount, price or scope of cover. Submitting a questionnaire does not itself mean the risk has been accepted.
| Circumstance | Possible assessment outcome |
|---|---|
| Age outside the plan limits | Another plan or term, or rejection for the selected product. |
| Serious illness, treatment or recent surgery | A request for medical information or examination, postponement, individual terms or rejection. |
| Recognised disability | A decision under the plan rules and individual assessment. It is incorrect to say all people with disabilities are excluded from all life insurance. |
| Hazardous occupation or extreme sport | Higher premium, specific limitations, individual agreement or ineligibility for a particular package. |
| Particular lifestyle or status circumstances | Checking the information listed in the questionnaire and rules, including product-specific restrictions. |
| Insufficient assessment information | Further documents or inability to agree the selected amount until the assessment is complete. |
A medical questionnaire does not mean everyone must undergo an examination. The assessment depends on the plan, amount and answers. Disclose known material circumstances accurately. If a question is unclear, obtain and retain an explanation; do not agree to conceal a diagnosis for faster purchase. It is best to obtain any exclusion for a particular illness in writing.
Reliability and guarantees: what should you check?
Check the company’s licence for the relevant activity, the insurer’s full name and the plan documents. Kazakhstan’s Insurance Payments Guarantee Fund system has been extended to all types of savings life insurance. However, its mechanism operates under statutory conditions, not as a promise of any level of return or cover for excluded events.
Distinguish the insurer’s contractual obligations, the Fund’s mechanism when an insurer encounters difficulties, and projected investment income. Ask how the system applies to your selected product. Deposit guarantees and insurance payment guarantees are different systems. Any advertised tax advantages must also be checked against current rules and your circumstances rather than automatically added to the return.
How to choose a plan for your needs
- Define the goal. A death benefit for the family, support after injury or capital by a particular date? These are different needs.
- Calculate the protection needed. Compare essential family expenses and obligations with existing reserves and other cover. One large advertised limit does not guarantee the protection required.
- Compare three quotations. Personal accident, protection-only life and savings life cover, over comparable terms and for the relevant events. You can also compare protection-only cover with saving separately.
- Obtain documents before paying. The policy or draft, insurance terms, key information document where available, premium schedule, guaranteed benefits and surrender values.
- Separate projections from obligations. Ask to see the outcome without future non-guaranteed bonuses.
- Check acceptance and exclusions. Ensure health, occupation and activities have been agreed and the required options are actually included.
- Appoint beneficiaries. Clarify how to change them and how payment works for different events.
- Keep evidence. The application, questionnaire answers, policy, terms, quotation and payment documents.
How to claim a benefit
When a specified event occurs, contact the insurer using the method and deadlines in the contract. Depending on the risk, it may require an application, identification, medical reports, death or disability documents, records from competent authorities and beneficiary documents. Request the precise list for your case.
For a maturity benefit, also clarify the application procedure and bank details: do not assume a transfer is automatic without checking the contract. If payment is refused, request written reasons identifying the relevant terms and circumstances. The appropriate challenge procedure depends on the dispute.
A brief check before signing
Protection: which causes and events entitle you to money?
Budget: how much is payable, and when, over the entire term?
Outcome: what is guaranteed and what is only projected?
Exit: how much is returned on early termination?
Acceptance: have health, age and additional risks been agreed?
Choose savings life insurance as a long-term contract for protection and saving. Its value is determined by how well it fits your goal, the sustainability of payments and clear obligations, rather than the highest percentage in a presentation.
